I’ve always thought that Pan d’Arancia — literally “Orange Bread” — is a beautiful name, don’t you? It instantly evokes the essence of Sicily: the scent of citrus groves, the warmth of the sun, and the comfort of homemade sweets.

The Sicilian Orange Plumcake is a classic that captures all these sensations in one moist, fragrant loaf. What makes it special is that the whole orange — peel and all — is blended into the batter, giving it a deep aroma and rich flavor that no extract can match.
For this reason, always choose organic oranges, as you’ll be using the peel too. Their natural oils infuse the cake with an irresistible scent while keeping it wonderfully soft and light.
As the cake bakes, your kitchen will fill with the most heavenly citrus fragrance — a promise of the tender, sunny slices waiting to be enjoyed. It’s one of those desserts that awaken the senses long before the first bite.
If you love citrus desserts as much as I do, don’t miss my popular orange-inspired recipes: the Orange Tiramisu and the Sicilian Orange Pudding (naturally vegan)! Each one celebrates the bright, sunny flavor of fresh oranges — perfect for bringing a touch of Sicily to your kitchen:

The Orange Batter

Prepare the orange — Wash the orange thoroughly under warm running water, then dry it well with a kitchen towel. Cut off both ends — the stem and the tip — and discard them. Slice the remaining orange into large chunks, keeping the peel on because it holds most of the essential oils and aroma (1). Make sure to remove any visible seeds, then place the pieces into a food processor or blender. Blend until you get a smooth, fragrant purée (2) — this will be the heart of your Orange Plumcake, giving it that unmistakable Sicilian flavor and scent.
Tip: Always use organic oranges, since you’re using the peel — it’s the secret to a safe and delicious flavor.

Mix the base — In a large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar with an electric whisk until pale, airy, and doubled in volume. Slowly drizzle in the oil while whisking. Add the orange purée and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth and fragrant (3).
Combine dry ingredients — In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Then, begin adding these dry ingredients a little at a time into the orange mixture. Use your electric mixer on the lowest speed, mixing gently after each addition (4) — just until the flour is absorbed. This gradual process helps the batter stay light and smooth without overworking the gluten.
The result should be a thick but silky batter, beautifully perfumed with orange (5). You’ll notice how the texture becomes creamier with each gentle mix — that’s exactly what you want for a tender, fluffy cake crumb.

Bake the Orange Cake
Grease and flour your Loaf Pan (my favorite non-stick loaf pan, available on my Amazon shop) — it measures 20 cm x 11 cm (about 8 x 4.3 inches) and is just the right size for this cake.
Pro Tip – For extra safety and easy unmolding, I also line it with a strip of baking paper along the long side, leaving some overhang on the edges so I can lift the cake out easily once it’s baked.
Once your pan is ready, pour in the batter and gently smooth the top with a spatula (6). You’ll notice the delicate orange fragrance even before it goes into the oven — that’s when you know something delicious is about to happen!
Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C (356 °F) for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. The cake will rise beautifully, forming a golden crust while staying soft inside. If the top browns too quickly, cover it loosely with foil during the last 10 minutes.
Once the cake is beautifully golden and fully baked, remove it from the oven. Let your Orange Plumcake cool completely before adding the glaze or powdered sugar.
Make the Glaze and Decorate
While the cake cools, prepare the glaze. In a bowl, mix the powdered sugar with the orange juice, adding the liquid a little at a time until you reach a smooth, pourable consistency. It should coat a spoon without being too runny.
Once your Orange Plumcake is completely cool, it’s time for the most satisfying part — glazing and decorating. Place a cooling rack (or wire grid) over a large plate or tray. This trick helps catch any excess glaze that drips off, keeping your counter perfectly clean. Set the loaf gently on the rack, then slowly pour the orange glaze over the top (7), letting it flow naturally along the sides. You can guide it with the back of a spoon if you’d like a more even coating.
Let the glaze set at room temperature until it becomes slightly firm and glossy.
How to Serve the Sicilian Orange Cake
For a finishing touch, decorate with a few thin slices of fresh orange, candied orange slices or chopped pistachios for a touch of color and crunch.
Caramelized Orange Version. If you want to take this cake to a more elegant level, try lining the bottom of your loaf pan with caramelized orange slices. All you have to do is simmer thin orange rounds in sugar and water until they turn golden and glossy, then arrange them neatly before pouring the batter on top. Once baked and inverted, you’ll have a stunning amber-tinted top that looks straight out of a Sicilian pastry shop — shiny, fragrant, and full of character.
Pistachio Twist. Pistachios are another treasure of Sicilian cuisine, and they add a delightful crunch and color to this recipe. You can mix a handful of finely chopped green pistachios into the batter for a delicate nutty flavor, or sprinkle them on top of the orange glaze for contrast. The bright green against the citrus orange makes this plumcake look like a slice of Mediterranean sunshine.

Storage Tips
The Sicilian Orange Plumcake keeps perfectly at room temperature for 4–5 days if stored in an airtight container. Avoid the fridge unless it’s very hot, as it can dry the cake slightly.
You can also freeze individual slices and warm them up in the toaster or microwave whenever you need a sweet pick-me-up.
Sicilian Orange Bread Variations to Try
One of the things I love most about this Orange Plumcake is how versatile it is. Once you’ve mastered the basic recipe, you can play with endless variations — each one bringing out a different side of the Sicilian citrus flavor. Here are some of my favorite twists:
Chocolate Orange Cake. For those who love the marriage of citrus and cocoa, transform your Orange Plumcake into a chocolate orange loaf. Fold in a few tablespoons of dark chocolate chips into the batter or drizzle the finished cake with melted dark chocolate. The deep bitterness of cocoa perfectly balances the sweet, tangy notes of the orange — a combination that feels indulgent yet perfectly balanced.
Almond Flour Version. If you want something a bit softer and richer, try replacing part of the all-purpose flour with almond flour. This variation gives the cake a more delicate crumb and a faintly nutty sweetness that pairs beautifully with the citrus aroma. It’s also naturally gluten-friendly if you substitute all the flour with a gluten-free blend.
Perfect Pairings
Like all Sicilian desserts, this Orange Plumcake isn’t just a cake — it’s an experience that invites you to slow down and savor the moment. Its soft texture and bright citrus flavor pair wonderfully with both warm drinks and elegant wines.
If you’re serving it after dinner, a small glass of Passito di Pantelleria is an exquisite choice. This golden dessert wine, made from sun-dried Zibibbo grapes, echoes the cake’s fruity sweetness while adding honeyed, floral notes. Each sip enhances the orange aroma and makes every bite feel luxurious.
For a more festive or daytime occasion, pair it with a chilled glass of Prosecco. The gentle bubbles and light sweetness of this sparkling wine perfectly match the plumcake’s airy crumb, making it ideal for brunches, spring picnics, or tea parties.
And of course, for a truly authentic Sicilian breakfast, you can never go wrong with a strong espresso or a creamy cappuccino. The bitterness of the coffee balances the cake’s sweetness, bringing out the bright citrus flavor with every bite — the simplest and most genuine pairing of all.
