Which Puff Pastry to Use

You can use store-bought puff pastry — rectangular or square sheets work perfectly and save a lot of time. If you want to get fancy, fresh or frozen pastry works just as well. For those who enjoy a bit of a kitchen challenge, you can even make your own puff pastry at home — check out my guide on how to make puff pastry without expensive equipment. But honestly, the ready-made pastry is more than enough and will give you excellent results with minimal effort.

Which Ham to Choose

Traditionally, Parma ham is a great choice for flavor and texture, but don’t worry if you don’t have it on hand. Thinly sliced prosciutto, smoked ham, or even cooked deli ham will work wonderfully. The key is to use something thinly sliced and flavorful, so the breadsticks are tasty without overpowering the puff pastry.

How to Make the Puff Pastry Ham Breadsticks

Ingredients (for ~12 breadsticks)

  • 300 g (11 oz) puff pastry sheet
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) Parma ham
  • 1 egg

Instructions

Start by preheating your oven to 220°C / 428°F so the puff pastry has a chance to rise beautifully and turn a lovely golden color.

On a lightly floured surface (or use the baking paper that the puff pastry sheet was rolled up with), roll out the puff pastry into a rectangle or circle. Place the Parma ham evenly over one half of the pastry (1), then fold the other half over the top (2). Press gently with your hands to seal and flatten the layers slightly. Once ready, cut the folded pastry into thin strips, about 1–2 cm wide (3).

Twist each strip gently to create a spiral (4) — this gives the breadsticks a professional look and adds a nice texture when baked.

Place the twisted strips onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Beat an egg and brush it lightly over each breadstick (5) — this will give them a shiny, golden finish once baked.

Bake for 10–15 minutes, keeping an eye on them towards the end so they don’t overbake. Once they’re crisp and golden (6), remove them from the oven and let them cool completely: they’re best enjoyed at room temperature, with that perfect flaky, buttery texture.

Your ham breadsticks are ready. Serve them at your next party, brunch, or as an appetizer for guests — they’ll look impressive, taste amazing, and no one will guess you made them in just five minutes!

Tips & Variations

  • You can sprinkle a little grated Parmesan or sesame seeds over the breadsticks before baking for extra flavor.
  • For a spicier twist, brush lightly with olive oil and sprinkle a pinch of chili flakes.
  • Twist the strips tighter for a crunchier bite, or leave them looser for a softer texture.
  • Serve alongside dips like mustard, pesto, or cream cheese for a more substantial appetizer platter.

Storage Instructions

Puff Pastry Ham Breadsticks are at their best on the day they’re baked, when they’re still crispy and golden. If you want to prepare ahead, you can keep the twisted, unbaked strips in the fridge for a few hours before baking. Once baked, any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a day, although the pastry may lose some of its crispness.

For longer storage, you can freeze the baked breadsticks once completely cooled. Wrap them well in foil or place them in a freezer-safe bag, and they’ll keep for up to a month. To enjoy, simply thaw at room temperature or warm them briefly in a hot oven to bring back some of that golden crispness.
