Ham and Cheese Swirls: The Puff Pastry Party Appetizer You Can Make in Just 5 Minutes

There are certain appetizers that quietly save the day every single time. For my family, Ham and Cheese Swirls are one of those recipes. They show up at birthday parties, Sunday lunches, last-minute aperitivi, and even as a quick snack when someone suddenly rings the doorbell.

Ham and Cheese Swivels: The Puff Pastry Party Appetizer You Can Make in Just 5 Minutes

They’re made with puff pastry, ham, and cheese — ingredients I almost always have on hand — and they come together so quickly that no one ever believes how easy they are. These swirled, golden bites look festive, taste comforting, and disappear from the table in minutes.

If you’re looking for a reliable, crowd-pleasing puff pastry appetizer that works for parties, brunch, or casual snacking, this is one to keep in your back pocket.

Ingredients for Ham and Cheese Swirls

  • Puff pastry sheet – Store-bought puff pastry works perfectly here. You can use rectangular or round puff pastry, fresh or frozen (fully thawed). Homemade puff pastry is wonderful too, but it is absolutely not required.
  • Ham – Use good-quality cooked ham or “prosciutto cotto“, in Italian. Parma ham works well, but a milder, less salty ham is perfect too, as it won’t overpower the buttery puff pastry and cheese.
  • Cheese – Cheddar, Asiago, Fontina, or any cheese that melts well. Grate it or cut it into thin julienne strips for even melting.

How to Make Ham and Cheese Swirls

These ham and cheese Swivels take just 5 minutes to prepare and don’t require any special skills. Simply unroll the puff pastry, layer on the ham and cheese, roll it up, and bake! In no time, you’ll have golden, cheesy bites that everyone will love. So grab your apron and let’s get started — your party snack just got a serious upgrade!

Prepare the Puff Pastry Base

Preheat your oven to 220°C / 428°F. Unroll the puff pastry onto your work surface (1), keeping the parchment paper underneath, or place it directly on a fresh sheet of baking paper.

Lay the thin slices of ham evenly over the puff pastry, covering the surface without overlapping too much (2). Sprinkle the grated or julienned cheese over the ham (3).

Pro Tip: When adding the cheese, concentrate slightly more toward the edge closest to you. As you roll the pastry, the filling naturally shifts forward.

Roll and Shape the Swirls

Starting from the long edge closest to you, gently roll the puff pastry into a tight log (4). Use a light touch — pressing too firmly will push the cheese out of the sides.

Once rolled, use a sharp knife to slice the log into rounds about 1 cm (½ inch) thick (5). Arrange the swirls cut-side up on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving a little space between each one (6).

Bake Until Golden and Melty

Bake in the preheated oven for 10–15 minutes, or until the puff pastry is fully puffed and golden. The cheese should be completely melted and lightly browned on the surface (7).

Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving — the cheese will be very hot straight out of the oven.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these Ham and Cheese Swirls warm or at room temperature as a party appetizer, brunch side, or casual snack. They pair beautifully with sparkling wine, prosecco, or a simple aperitivo spread with olives and nuts.

They’re also great for buffets and potlucks — easy to transport, easy to eat, and always popular.

Storage Instructions

Ham and Cheese Swirls are best enjoyed fresh, on the same day they’re baked, when the puff pastry is at its crispiest. However, they remain tasty for up to 2 days; the pastry may lose a bit of its crunch over time.

If needed, you can prepare the unbaked swirls in advance and store them in the refrigerator for a few hours before baking.

You can also freeze the swirls after baking. Thaw and warm them briefly in a hot oven to regain some of the crispiness.
